All Greek Fraternity Presentation at the University of Oregon
EUGENE OREGON , OCTOBER 2006
In October of 2006 Gord Alumnus and a member of the G.O.R.D. board of Advisors, Cal Hackstaff gave an alcohol education presentation at the University of Oregon. In attendance were members from all the Greek fraternities. Cal, gives a very powerful presentation. As with most other G.O.R.D. members Cal has first hand experience with the death of Gordie Bailey at the University of Colorado. Cal, found Gordie, dead on the floor, while returning home from an exam. Not having participated in drinking the night before, he found Gordie and called 9-1-1. Obviously Cal had a big impact on the guys from the University of Oregon, as his presentation is credited with saving another young pledge's life.
The following is a letter written to G.O.R.D. in response to our University of Oregon presentation:
Dear friends of Gordie,
My name is Bo Wright I am a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Oregon. Recently I watched a presentation given at our school by Cal, I believe, about the tradgedy that occured at the Chi Psi chapter at CU Boulder. It was really a great experience for me because it opened my eyes to many things. As a chapter we have begun making alterations to our pledging process specifically to the events that include drinking. More specifically it saved one of our pledges lives last night. We had a function for the pledges for officially choosing our house and a member of this pledge class had close to Gordie's BAC. We attended to him immediately but later in the night, giving him a comfortable place to sleep with water and guys keeping an eye on him. As the night went on we decided to take him to the hospital to give him the help he needed. He was greatful in the morning telling us of the shock he had when he woke up in the hospital. I am confident in saying that it was your presentation and story that led to his life continuing. I wanted to thank you very much for this as we may have taken the same mindset in putting him to bed and letting him "sleep it off". Thank you again and I hope this is still the current email becuase I wanted to share my sentiments with you and wish you all in this foundation the best.
Sincerely,
Bo Wright
